How Does Invisalign Work

Invisalign is a form of a clear aligner orthodontic therapy used as an alternative to a traditional wire and bracket braces. Clear aligners are a great option for patients of any age, especially adults in the workforce that do not want to contend with a mouth full of metal and frequent trips to the orthodontist. Invisalign is one of the original and leading clear aligner companies and have successfully straightened millions of smiles. If you are considering orthodontic treatment, clear aligner therapy could be a great option for you!

Before beginning any treatment, you will need to have a consultation to see if the proposed treatment is the best option for you. A lot of general dentists are preferred providers for Invisalign and your dentist may be able to provide treatment for you. To determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign, your dentist will make impressions of both the upper and lower jaw, take a number of photos and x-rays which will all be sent to Invisalign for a computerized animation of your treatment.

When your dentist receives your proposed treatment back from Invisalign, they will have you come in to review your case at which point you will see the animation showing the step-by-step movement of your teeth. During this visit, it is important to review any concerns that you may have concerning your treatment and make sure that the animation shows a satisfactory final product.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

Invisalign uses a series of BPA free, clear plastic aligners that are custom made to gradually shift your teeth into their new position. Each set of trays is worn for 10 to 14 days before being changed to the next set. Your aligner trays are to be worn for at least 22 hours per day, being removed only for eating and oral hygiene. If a tooth needs to be rotated or vertically shifted, tooth colored attachments are cemented onto the front of the tooth and the Invisalign tray fits over the attachment so you will not be able to feel the attachment unless you do not have your trays in.

Once you are done with your series of trays, your dentist will make sure that you are happy with your smile and that no refinement is necessary. If you do require refinement, you will be given additional trays to achieve perfect results. You will be given final retainers to wear at all times until your dentist says that you can start wearing them just when you sleep.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The timeframe for most Invisalign treatment is between six and 18 months but your individual case will of course be determined by the severity of your individual case.

Even though your trees need to be changed every 10 to 14 days, you may not need to visit your dentist each time. Some patients are able to receive a few sets of trays to move through before their dentist needs to see them again. If your dentist needs to see you to change your trays, it is important that you comply and visit your dentist when needed because they are there to make sure that your teeth are tracking with the treatment and moving how they should.

Is Invisalign orthodontic treatment right for me?

Having a smile that is straight not only brings confidence to the patient but is also beneficial to oral health. Overcrowded and crooked teeth are much more difficult to clean than straight teeth. Patients with overcrowding are more susceptible to decay and periodontal disease which can lead to other health issues down the road. If you are looking to straighten and improve your smile, speak with your dentist to see if you are a candidate for Invisalign clear aligner therapy.
