Gum Appearance and Gingivectomy
Gingivectomy
A gingivectomy is a procedure commonly used in dentistry to treat receding gums and inflammation. An estimated 50% of all adults in the United States have some form of gum disease, which can cause serious, long-term consequences when it is not treated. The gingivectomy is effective in restoring the appearance of the gums and reversing complications from gum disease. The procedure also makes it easier for patients to practice good oral hygiene, which is critical in preventing gum disease from returning.
Procedure
The dental professional will administer a local anesthetic to numb the gums that are being treated. A laser or scalpel is then used to remove the gum tissue. The gums are then shaped with a laser, and the wound is sealed with stitches. If a laser is used for the entire treatment, sutures are not needed. The wound will be covered with a dental putty which helps protect the gums while they heal.
Candidates
Below are common reasons a gingivectomy is performed:
- Gum disease
- Eliminate infection
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Improve the cosmetic appearance of the gums and smile
- Enhance the ability to practice good oral hygiene
- Treat receding gums
Gum Disease
When a patient’s gums start to pull away from the teeth, a gingivectomy is often recommended. It is common for deep pockets to form below the gum line when patients have gum disease. This allows for the accumulation of bacteria, plaque, and tartar. These periodontal pockets also make it challenging to effectively brush and floss the teeth.
Tools
A scalpel or laser is commonly used for the procedure. Lasers were introduced more recently and have quickly gained popularity. The use of lasers often requires special training and can be expensive. Advantages of using a laser for the procedure are that the recovery timeline is expedited and stitches are not required to close the gums. Some dental professionals still prefer using a scalpel for the procedure due to their effectiveness and affordability.
Post Procedure Restrictions
Following the procedure, patients should not brush their teeth for the first day or two as it can damage the sensitive gums. Flossing should also be avoided near the treatment site for at least a few days. A warm salt rinse can be used to keep the mouth clean during the first 24 hours. Patients should consume soft, mild foods while the gums recover and heal. Hard, crunchy, and sticky foods should be avoided during this time.
Patients should also not use tobacco products during their recovery. Smoking can cause complications as it limits the body’s ability to heal and fight infection.
Gum Appearance
A gingivectomy is an effective method used to restore the appearance of the gums. The procedure works to maintain the symmetry of the teeth and gums. To maintain the benefits of the procedure, it is important for patients to practice good oral hygiene.
Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene includes at least twice daily brushing and flossing of the teeth. Patients should also make regular visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning and examination. When patients do not maintain good oral hygiene, gum disease can return, and the benefits of the gingivectomy can be reversed.
