Cosmetic & Restorative Dental Crowns

Everyone deserves to feel confident in their smile, but damaged, broken, or noticeably worn teeth can leave some people feeling self-conscious about their appearance. These concerns can also affect the health and function of your smile, making it important to address damaged teeth before additional problems develop.

At Heritage Dentistry in Greenville, South Carolina, we offer a comprehensive range of restorative and cosmetic dental services designed to improve the health, function, and appearance of your smile. Dental crowns are one option that may be recommended when a tooth has been significantly weakened or damaged by decay, a crack, fracture, or other dental concern.

A dental crown is a custom restoration designed to cover the visible portion of a damaged tooth. By surrounding and protecting the tooth, a crown can restore its shape, strength, and function while improving its appearance. Modern dental crowns can also be designed to closely resemble your natural teeth, allowing the restoration to blend naturally with the rest of your smile.

As a Greenville native and fourth-generation dentist, Dr. Preston Hamrick is proud to continue his family’s tradition of serving the community. Dental Crown Process

The dental crown process begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Hamrick, who will conduct a thorough oral examination to determine if a dental crown is necessary and the underlying cause of decay. If you are interested in getting a dental crown placed for cosmetic purposes, Dr. Hamrick will ask you to share your concerns and personal treatment goals and offer his professional opinion on whether dental crowns will provide you with the results you desire.

If it is determined that a dental crown is the best treatment option, the procedure will begin by cleaning your mouth, then numbing the area to reduce or eliminate discomfort. Dental sedation will also be available to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, Dr. Hamrick will prepare your tooth for crown placement by drilling away decayed or damaged enamel and trimming your tooth to ensure its stability.  Next, he will take an impression of your teeth, which will be used to fabricate a custom-made crown designed for your exact mouth to ensure optimal functionality and aesthetic appearance.

It will take approximately 2-3 weeks for your crown to be finished, during which you will wear a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Once your crown is finished, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is placed and tested for proper fit, then bonded into place. Finally, Dr. Hamrick will polish and buff your new tooth, and the procedure will be complete.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a safe and effective treatment option to refresh your smile and restore confidence in your grin. Benefits include:

  • Restore damaged teeth: Effective at restoring teeth that cannot be corrected with a filling, dental bonding, or veneer.
  • Easy to maintain: Cosmetic dental crowns can be taken care of just like your natural teeth. Provided you brush and floss twice daily and continue scheduling six-month teeth cleanings and oral exams, your dental crowns will last for many years to come.
  • Natural look: Unlike metal crowns, which are very noticeable when smiling, porcelain crowns provide the same level of support while matching the natural look and feel of your natural smile.

Preserve the Longevity of Your Dental Crowns

Following your dental crown treatment, it is important to follow good oral hygiene habits to avoid needing additional dental crowns in the future. Be sure to continue brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily, eat a healthy and balanced diet, and avoid use of tobacco. We also encourage our clients to schedule regular dental cleanings at least every six months to ensure the health and sustained brightness of your smile. In addition to giving your teeth a professional cleaning, these visits are also an opportunity for Dr. Preston Hamrick to evaluate your overall oral health, as he looks for any indications of gum disease or any other underlying issue that may require treatment. If you follow these best practices, you will enjoy a bright, white, healthy smile for many years to come.
