Dental Crowns Cover-Up And Protect Damaged Teeth
A dental crown is also sometimes called a “cap,” because it caps and protects the underlying tooth enamel and structure. Your crown from Heritage Dentistry will be custom-made to fit your smile perfectly and restore the form and function of your damaged tooth. Dental crowns are also sometimes used for cosmetic dentistry, to cover up teeth that are small or misshapen.
What Is A Dental Crown? Understanding The Basics
Dental crowns are a type of dental prosthesis designed to cover up and protect your entire tooth. A crown is shaped just like a natural tooth, and is permanently attached to your enamel after it has been trimmed.
Because crowns restore the shape of your tooth and protect it from further damage, they are typically used to treat teeth that have been severely damaged due to a deep or large cavity, or that have been cracked or broken by an oral injury. Crowns are also used to cover up teeth after root canals, and are occasionally used in cosmetic dentistry.
The Crown Placement Process
It takes two appointments to get a dental crown at Heritage Dentistry. At your first appointment, Dr. Hamrick will need to trim your tooth to prepare it for crown placement. He will clean and numb your mouth, then drill away any damaged or decayed enamel before trimming your tooth into a stable platform for your crown.
Next, Dr. Hamrick will take dental impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a lab where your crown will be made. He will attach a temporary crown to protect your tooth, and send you home.
In about 2-3 weeks, your final crown will be sent to our office, and you’ll come in for your second and final appointment. Dr. Hamrick will remove your temporary crown, check your permanent crown to make sure it fits perfectly, and then bond it into place with dental cement. Then, your new tooth will be buffed and polished, completing the procedure.
