Restore Your Smile With Fixed Implant Dentures

Patient with fixed implant dentures

If you have lost most or all of your teeth due to extensive tooth decay, advanced gum disease or a serious accident, you may be looking for an alternative to traditional dentures. While traditional dentures are effective and affordable, they can be uncomfortable and take some getting used to, and they do not function as well as your real teeth, in most cases.

What should you do? At Heritage Dentistry, we offer a more comfortable, convenient, and natural-feeling alternative to traditional dentures. Learn more about these unique implant-based dentures offered by our Greenville dentist now.

Understanding All-On-Four Dentures

Traditional dentures are only supported by your gum tissue, and use a very tight fit, which keeps them in place with friction. Dental adhesives can also be used to improve their fit somewhat.

All-On-Four Dentures, unlike traditional dentures, do not use a friction-based fit to stay in place. Instead, four dental implants are placed in your upper or lower arch of teeth. Then, a customized set of dental bridges are built to fit perfectly into your mouth.

With All-On-Four, your teeth will not come loose or shift in place. This makes them more comfortable and convenient, and makes them function more like real teeth.

The Placement Process For All-On-Four Dentures

Before your treatment can begin, the teeth remaining in the upper, lower, or both arches of the jaw must be extracted, and then the jaw and gums must be allowed to heal.

Once you are ready for the next step of the procedure, Dr. Preston Hamrick will develop an implant placement plan, to ensure that your implants are properly placed and supported. Then, during your next appointment, he will insert four implants in your mouth, according to this plan.

The surgery takes about 2.5 hours for each arch that is to be treated, in most cases. Typically, it takes around 4-6 months for your implants to heal and “osseointegrate” with the natural gum and jaw tissue. While your teeth heal, you’ll wear a set of temporary dentures.

While your teeth heal, Dr. Hamrick will create a custom-built dental bridge. Once your implants have healed, you will come in for a follow-up appointment, and your All-On-Four denture will be placed.

The Benefits Of All-On-Four Dentures

Compared to a standard set of dentures, All-On-Four dentures have a number of benefits:

    • The dental implants support and strengthen the jaw, preventing it from deteriorating after you’ve lost your teeth
    • There are no food or dietary restrictions. However, you should avoid chewing non-food objects and extremely hard objects, like pens, fingernails, or ice, to avoid damaging your denture
    • Porcelain teeth look more natural, and are more durable than the acrylic teeth used in most traditional dentures.
    • All-On-Four does not have to be removed, and is fixed in place permanently
